I was looking for convertible hiking pants for a 10 1/2 day backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, but couldn't afford $60+ for Columbia or other brands. Enter Free Soldier. I needed to get 4 pairs (2 for my son and 2 for me). For about 1/2 the price of name brand, we both really like the pants. The fit is good, the belt is alright (did the job), and the converability is great. I left the lower zip off section on the entire trek (even though temps were in the upper 80s to low 90s. I did take a tip from some other folks on trail and just unzipped the knee area without fully removing the lower leg section. It was nice to have the ability to vent some heat without exposing all of my skin to the sun. We didn't experience much rain, but the few times I spilled water on the pants, the water beaded up and rolled off. The zippered hip pockets are nice and held my phone and battery pack quite well. My son likes the pants so much he will wear them.to school starting this Fall.
